Valhalla Knights

Valhalla Knights is a fantasy action role-playing game released in 2006 for the Sony PlayStation Portable. It was developed by K2 LLC and published by Marvelous Entertainment.

The story takes place in a once-peaceful realm where humans, elves, halflings, and other races lived together in harmony. This tranquility ended when the Dark Lord returned to claim the land, sparking a series of bloody battles. After years of war, a hero named Rulzult sealed the Dark Lord away, but the demon blood spilled during the conflict cursed the land, turning it into a dark, despair-filled place known as "the Cursed Land." A young hero awakens there with no memory of their past, and the story follows their journey to recover those memories and decide the land's future.

In gameplay, players fight monsters to gather items and equipment. Characters can be chosen from five races: human, dwarf, halfling, elf, and machine. Four initial job classes are available—Fighter, Mage, Priest, and Thief—with additional classes like Anchor, Knight, Samurai, and Ninja unlocked via job cards dropped by monsters in certain areas. Each character can have up to two job subclasses alongside their main class, and attributes from subclasses carry over (for example, a Fighter with a Mage subclass can cast spells). Combat actions change based on equipped weapons, and each weapon type is restricted to specific job classes. Building up a gauge through combat allows a character to perform a special attack, which varies depending on the weapon equipped.

Reception was mixed or average, according to Metacritic. GameSpot and IGN criticized the story, and IGN found the side quests unclear.

Sequels include Valhalla Knights 2, released for the PlayStation Portable in North America on October 1, 2008, which added more races and improved combat. Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga came out for the Wii in North America on September 29, 2009, featuring online cooperative play. Valhalla Knights 3 was released for the PlayStation Vita in May 2013.
