Deadly Premonition is an open-world survival horror game from 2010, developed by Access Games. The player takes on the role of FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan, who is sent to the fictional rural town of Greenvale, Washington, to investigate the murder of an eighteen-year-old woman. This killing appears to be connected to a series of similar murders across the country. The game originally launched on Xbox 360 in February 2010 and on PlayStation 3 the following month. In North America, Ignition Entertainment published the Xbox 360 version, while Marvelous Entertainment handled the Japanese release and Rising Star Games released it in Europe. The PlayStation 3 version was only released in Japan, also by Marvelous Entertainment. A director's cut edition arrived for PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows worldwide in 2013, published by Rising Star Games. A Nintendo Switch port, titled *Deadly Premonition: Origins*, followed in 2019.
The game is a reboot of Access Games' earlier project, *Rainy Woods*, which was in development from September 2004 to October 2007. *Rainy Woods* was canceled shortly after its debut at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show due to technical problems. *Deadly Premonition* reused assets from that project but combined them with a new scenario and a new protagonist, Francis York Morgan. Gameplay is split between detective work—investigating Greenvale and its residents—and supernatural combat sequences where York must fight or avoid otherworldly beings. The developers aimed for a sense of realism in the setting: non-player characters follow a unique 24-hour schedule, and the size of Greenvale was designed to match that of a real rural American town. During development, the team faced challenges with memory allocation, lighting and shadow issues, and the PhysX physics engine.
The game received wildly mixed reviews from critics and holds a Guinness World Record for being the most critically polarizing survival horror game. Although the original release was not a commercial success, it developed a cult following and has been cited as an example of video games as art. A sequel, *Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise*, was released in 2020.
