Sengoku Night Blood

A free-to-play otome game blending Sengoku warlords with supernatural tribes.

Sengoku Night Blood was a Japanese free-to-play otome game developed as a collaboration between Marvelous Entertainment, Kadokawa, and Idea Factory's Otomate. It was released in Japan on May 29, 2017, for Android and iOS devices, and later received a 12-episode anime television series adaptation by Typhoon Graphics that aired between October 3 and December 26, 2017. The game's narrative follows a kind-hearted and strong-willed girl named Yuzuki, who is transported from Japan to the world of Shinga, where she encounters various armies of the Sengoku era, all members of the Gekka Tribe—supernatural creatures such as vampires, werewolves, and oni. Yuzuki's blood possesses the unique ability to initiate 'Awakenings' in the Gekka Tribe, unlocking their latent racial powers and serving as a decisive trump card in battle.

Lore & Background

The game's protagonist, Yuzuki, voiced by Rie Kugimiya, is a girl from Japan who is transported to the world of Shinga. There, she meets armies of the Sengoku period, all of whom are members of the Gekka Tribe, including vampires, werewolves, and oni. Yuzuki's blood can trigger 'Awakenings' in these beings, allowing them to unleash their latent racial powers and greatly increase their strength in battle. She is tasked by a mysterious Himemiko—a woman whose blood possessed the same qualities—to unite Shinga in hopes of returning to her original world. The Toyotomi Army, led by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (voiced by Natsuki Hanae), consists of vampires. Hideyoshi, a former peasant who rose under Nobunaga before separating, views Nobunaga as an archenemy. He is playful and light-hearted on the surface but possesses a crafty and ruthless side, and he affectionately calls Yuzuki his 'bride.' His commanders include the level-headed Ishida Mitsunari, the calm strategist Kuroda Kanbee, the reckless Takenaka Hanbee, and the cheerful fighter Maeda Toshiie. The Oda Army, also vampires, is led by Oda Nobunaga (voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa), known as 'The Demon King of the Sixth Heaven' for his ruthless demeanor. His commanders include the gentlemanly Akechi Mitsuhide, the young Mori Ranmaru, the emotional fighter Shibata Katsuie, and the sharp-tongued Niwa Nagahide.

Reader's Guide

Sengoku Night Blood represents a notable cross-company collaboration in the otome game industry, bringing together Marvelous Entertainment, Kadokawa, and Idea Factory's Otomate brand. Its premise—reimagining historical Sengoku warlords as supernatural beings (vampires, werewolves, and oni) within a fantasy world—offered a fresh twist on the popular genre of historical romance games. The game's protagonist, Yuzuki, with her blood-based awakening ability, served as a narrative device to unite the warring factions. The franchise expanded beyond the mobile game into a 12-episode anime adaptation by Typhoon Graphics, which aired in late 2017, and a manga adaptation. The anime featured Hideyoshi as the male lead. Despite the game's initial success, the planned Nintendo Switch port was cancelled in October 2019, and the mobile game itself was discontinued two months later, on December 25, 2019. The franchise's legacy lies in its creative fusion of Japanese history and supernatural fantasy, its all-star voice cast, and its role as a collaborative project among major Japanese entertainment companies. The game's discontinuation and cancelled port mark it as a relatively short-lived but memorable entry in the otome genre.
