Luminous Arc

Tactical RPG series about elemental witches and knights.

Luminous Arc is a tactical role-playing game series originally created by Imageepoch before the company went bankrupt. The first game, *Luminous Arc*, launched for the Nintendo DS in 2007, and the most recent entry, *Luminous Arc Infinity*, came out only in Japan in 2015. A spiritual successor, *Stella Glow*, followed in 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS.

The series starts with *Luminous Arc*, released in Japan in February 2007, then in North America and Australia later that year by Atlus, and in Europe by Rising Star Games. Its story follows the Garden Children, a group of adventurers who first side with the Luminous Church to eliminate witches, but later join forces with the witches to stop a corrupt conspiracy.

*Luminous Arc 2* came out in Japan in May 2008, published by Marvelous Entertainment, and in North America and Europe by Atlus USA and Rising Star Games. The plot centers on Roland, a young knight who accidentally gains magic from the Runic Engine. Sent by the Kingdom of Carnava to fight Beast Fiends and the witches' Magic Association, he eventually allies with witches—including the rogue Shadow Frost Witch Fatima—to prevent the Fiends from destroying the world.

*Luminous Arc 3* was released only in Japan in December 2009, developed by Imageepoch and published by Marvelous Entertainment. A fan translation into English appeared in December 2021.

*Luminous Arc Infinity*, developed by Felistella for the PlayStation Vita, came out exclusively in Japan in August 2015, published by Marvelous Entertainment. Its producer was Yoshifumi Hashimoto, also known for the *Rune Factory* series.

The spiritual successor *Stella Glow* was Imageepoch’s final game before bankruptcy. Released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan by Sega in June 2015, in North America by Atlus USA in November 2015, and in Europe and Australia by NIS America in March 2016, it follows Alto, a young hero who joins the Regnant Knights with his childhood friend Lisette, now a witch. They aim to stop the Witch of Destruction, Hilda, by recruiting other witches who use song-based magic. Alto later must ally with Hilda to face an even greater threat.

Common elements across the series include a medieval fantasy setting and plots centered on elemental witches—powerful female magic-users recruited by the main character to save the world. The protagonist is usually a male knight of low renown but great poten

Reader's Guide

The Luminous Arc series is significant as a tactical role-playing franchise originally developed by Imageepoch, a studio that later went bankrupt. The series established a recurring theme of elemental witches and male knights, with gameplay similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, featuring isometric battlefields and grid-based movement. The series saw three main entries on the Nintendo DS, with Luminous Arc 3 released only in Japan on December 10, 2009, though a fan translation into English was released on December 24, 2021. The final entry, Luminous Arc Infinity, was developed by Felistella for the PlayStation Vita and released only in Japan on August 6, 2015, produced by Yoshifumi Hashimoto, also producer of the Rune Factory series. The series' legacy includes a spiritual successor, Stella Glow, released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2015, which was the last game developed by Imageepoch prior to its bankruptcy. Common elements across the series include fan service featuring witches, such as Luminous Arc 2's 'Engage' system, which also serves character development through socialization.
